Are you like me and don’t want to wear something twice because you’ve taken a ton of photos in a particular dress the last time you wore it? Rent The Runway has been a dream come true for this designer addict since I discovered it 4 years ago. Twist my arm to wear an Herve Leger out on the town or a $3000 Oscar De La Renta ball gown. They have fabulous customer service and I’ve never been left freaking out that I don’t like what I’m wearing to an event. First, you need to know your silhouette and what works on your body. If you don’t, RTR has stylists to give you suggestions based on body type and designer fit of the garment. They run promos all the time from $30 off to 20% off your first rental. I don’t typically choose dresses that have 100 reviews. You know how many times that dress has been dry cleaned? Its probably not the perfect dress for your event if you want a fresh new style. Have your items arrive at least 1-2 days before your event incase you aren’t happy with your selection. Call RTR immediately if you want another option overnighted to you. With that said, I’ve ordered a ball gown before that I didn’t like the way the zipper laid and they send me another option overnight for the cost of shipping. I ended up popping tags off a brand new Monique Lhuillier navy blue gown that rented for more than my original rental. Winner winner!
Here’s how RTR’s 3 rental options work:
PRO membership costs $29.95 annually. You get a $50 birthday credit to use the month of your birthday plus free standard shipping on each order. The contract auto-renews each year and bills your credit card the $29.95 fee. You can rent dresses, jumpsuits, jackets, purses and jewelry. With your rental you can choose your garment in 2 sizes (if available) and if you’re really uncertain on what you want to wear you can add an additional item of equal or lesser value for $32.50.
Select to rent a garment for 4 or 8 days (great if you are going out of the country or on a cruise). Many times I have dresses shipped directly to my hotel for weekend getaways, conventions or work meetings. Create favorite lists and save garments you like in different categories. Read reviews on fit based on body type, height, etc. The items arrive in a garment bag with a pre-printed return label to drop at a nearby UPS store. I’m a little leery about dropping them in a UPS drop box because there is no receipt to prove you dropped it off. If you’re rental is due back on Sunday when the UPS store is closed, you drop it off Monday by noon. So what happens if the garment is really lost? You get to buy it for the retail price! Same goes if the garment is destroyed…like you got ran over and it caught on fire. If you spill a glass of red wine on yourself, splash salad dressing or rip out the hem when you got down and dirty on the dance floor…you’re covered with the rental insurance. The insurance is to cover dry cleaning and repairs.
If you live near a Rent The Runway store, book an appointment with a stylist and try on several items before your rent. I love my girl Saghal Scego at the Georgetown store in Washington, DC. They have events where you can go sip champs, nibble on apps and see whats new to try on. The store front is used for new inventory fresh off the racks. They typically don’t have dresses in-store that have been in their inventory for a length of time. Need something to wear tonight? They’ve recently added an option to rent an item from their store. Just book an appointment before you go. You can also drop off rentals at the store if its easier than a UPS drop off store.
Unlimited membership runs $139/month. If you have more than 1 event to attend in a month or would like new work clothes for the season, look into RTR’s Unlimited membership. I started this last Spring when I had a military ball, followed by a White House event and a charity event to attend all in one month. It made sense to add the Unlimited membership which includes dry-cleaning. You choose 3 items from a different inventory than the rental inventory and you keep them as long as you like. When you send one item back, you get notification to choose a replacement item. If you send all 3 items back, you get to choose 3 more items. This membership allows you to take more risks in your wardrobe and try styles that you wouldn’t normally lean towards. You can cancel any time before you are auto-billed for the next month.
StylePass Beta launched Nov 15 for $65/month fee. It is program that lets you rent a look each month for just $65 (backup size, shipping and insurance included). Skip months or rent more often with exclusive membership pricing. Minimum requirement is to rent for 3 months annually. Everything in their 200,000-piece dream closet is yours! Ask me any questions in the comment sections and I’ll be happy to help you select a dress for your event or answer any questions about the rental process.
